The Xiaomi 13 line of smartphones was launched last month in China, and currently consists of two models: the Xiaomi 13 and the Xiaomi 13 Pro. The Xiaomi 13 Pro has received praise for its outstanding camera performance. However, rumors of a potential third model, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra, have been circulating even before the latest Mi company flagships were showcased.
According to a Chinese leaker on Weiboo, the Xiaomi 13 Ultra may be unveiled in April, and may even have a global launch. This would not be the first time a Xiaomi model has left mainland China, as the Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro are already being prepped for a global launch at MWC 2023 in Barcelona.
But, is there a need for a Xiaomi 13 Ultra? The Xiaomi 13 Pro is already considered to be as "ultra" as a flagship can get. When comparing the Xiaomi 12 Pro and the Xiaomi 12 Ultra, there were only slight differences. The Xiaomi 12 Pro was released 7 months prior to the Xiaomi 12S Ultra, and while both phones had a triple camera setup, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra was the first phone on which the Mi company collaborated with Leica, and it was also the first Xiaomi phone with a periscope camera.
When looking at the Xiaomi 13 and the Xiaomi 13 Pro, both phones come with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 silicon, both have camera tech developed with the help of Leica, and the Pro already has a periscope zoom capabilities. It is hard to imagine what a Xiaomi 13 Ultra would offer as an "upgrade" when compared to the Xiaomi 13 Pro.
While the tech industry is always full of surprises, it remains to be seen if the Xiaomi 13 Ultra will bring any new innovations to the table. Only time will tell, as we wait for more details to surface.
